Join us for this combination Yin Yoga & Sound Healing workshop.
Stress can be energizing, but it is also at the root of many contemporary illnesses. When our sympathetic nervous system is triggered and we go into fight or flight mode we experience chemical changes within our bodies. Since the body doesn’t know the difference between a lion attack, a job loss, or even an imaginary threat, it defends itself by shutting down all non-essential activities such as digestion and sexual function—all resources are rerouted to surviving the emergency. The body was not meant to remain in such a state of emergency, but that is how many of us are now living every day. This long-term or chronic low-grade stress can lead to further complications such as immune system dysfunction, which invites all manner of dissonance into the body. When we relax with yoga, sound, meditation, reiki, or other soothing modalities, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system and return to rest and repair mode. Triggering the relaxation response by entering alpha or theta brainwave states is where we want to be for healing and maintaining well-being. Harmonious, abstract sound is the express lane to that place.
Sound healing uses vibration to massage cells deep below the surface of the skin. It promotes a cleansing energetic release, balancing, and expansiveness. In combination with the restorative, opening poses of yin yoga, the harmonious sounds of the singing bowls quickly facilitate even deeper relaxation of muscles, joints, organs, thoughts, and breathing. As students of quantum physics, we know that everything is energy and that its shape depends on its vibration. For these two hours, we set aside the sounds of contemporary living—grumbly text alerts, droning machines, and the racing chatter in our own heads. In their place, we allow the ancient sounds of Tibetan bowls and other healing sounds to entrain us to the cosmic symphony.
Sound will be created with certified healing-grade Tibetan singing bowls, a crystal singing bowl, a crystal pyramid, Biosonics© tuning forks, and Koshi© chimes.
Scott Freyer received his 200-hour yoga certification from Kaia Yoga where he now teaches both yin yoga and meditation. He has studied with a host of yoga and Buddhist teachers including David Nichtern, Shambhala NYC’s senior teacher. Scott is also a musician and artist.
Kris Scheifele completed her reiki master certification at the NY Open Center. She is also a certified health coach, artist/MFA, sound healing aficionado, neuroplasticity enthusiast, and meditator. She began practicing yoga in 2000 at Dharma Yoga Center, NYC. A lengthy health challenge shifted her away from her former life as a stressed-out urbanite and TV producer/editor and sent her on an unexpected search for self-healing. Cultivating calm and healing mindset are now her highest priorities. For more information please visit: krisls.com
